ICLCS Doubles its Effort by Kicking Off a New Cadre of Chemistry Fellows

Description

On Saturday, April 19, 2008, the Institute for Chemistry Literacy through Computational Science (ICLCS) welcomed and introduced a second cadre of high school chemistry teachers to the ICLCS program. ICLCS has been actively working with 51 Cadre I Fellows since the summer Institute in June of 2007. In July 2008, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will welcome an additional 63 Fellows. Each of the Fellows represents a small rural school district in Illinois. Cadre II Fellows serve as the control group in the ICLCS research project. They arrive on campus for their first summer Institute experience on July 14-25, 2008 where they will be trained to use computational tools, participate in leadership training, and develop modules to use in their classrooms with the assistance of faculty mentors.

At the Opening Day workshop, Cadre II Fellows were introduced to the computational chemistry content, to the virtual learning community, and registered for their graduate level course that they take during the academic year. In addition to the summer Institutes, ICLCS provides ongoing support to Fellows throughout the school year through its active virtual community, and through a series of virtual workshops.
