Carolyn Gathright




Carolyn Hicks Gathright received a BS degree in mathematics from Jackson State University, Jackson Mississippi in 1967, an MS degree in mathematics for the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon in 1971, and an Ed. D. in curriculum and instruction with a specialization in mathematics education from the University of Houston, Houston, Texas. She has over 30 years experience in teaching mathematics at the middle school, high school, and college levels. She has over 10 years experience in teaching curriculum principles and methods of teaching elementary and secondary school mathematics at the college level and experience with inservice and pre-service professional development and supervision.

Carolyn Gathright has participated in research activities at the GTE Laboratories in Waltham, Massachusetts; American University in Cairo, Egypt as a Fulbright scholar; and at ETS in Princeton, New Jersey. Her mathematical research interests are in the areas of combinatorics and point set theory. Her educational research interests are in teaching mathematics using inquiry, cooperative, and constructivist teaching and learning approaches. She supports the use of hands-on and electronic mathematics laboratories as mediums for actively engaging students at all levels in mathematics learning.

She is currently an associate professor of mathematics and she serves as head of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Tuskegee University, Tuskegee, Alabama. She has written several grants and she is currently serving as a Co-PI on the following grants: An NSF grant, East Alabama Partnership for the Improvement of Mathematics (TEAM-Math), Title III Teacher Education Enhancement Sub-grant, and an Annenberg/UNCF School Linkage Program grant.

In her spare time, Carolyn loves to manipulate sets and sequences of numbers. She also loves to read novels and history of mathematics books, travel, and spend quality time with family and friends.
