Sheila Smith

Sheila Smith has been a science educator for the past thirty years. She taught high school biology for 24 years and is the current secondary science instructional specialist for the Jackson Public School District and co-principal investigator for a MSP (math and science partnership) grant with Jackson State University. Smith has also served as the National Science Foundation Project Director for a multi-million dollars mathematics and science grant (Jackson Urban Systemic Program). She received undergraduate and graduate degrees in biology and science education from Jackson State University.

Smith is the immediate-past president of the Mississippi Science Teachers Association (MSTA), state director for National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) and serves on two advisory committees for the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA). She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. She is a member of the 2009 National Congress on Science Education Planning Committee.

Smith has received numerous awards during her educational career: Mississippi Outstanding Biology Teacher, Hinds County Teacher of the Year, Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching State Finalist, Radio Shack National Teacher Award, A T & T Technology Teacher Award, and Governor's Fellow Award. She has also been awarded two Woodrow Wilson Fellowships to study at Princeton University and Organization of Tropical Studies in Costa Rica, a Fulbright Fellowship to Japan and an Earthwatch Fellowship to Kenya.

Smith regularly presents at state and national science conferences. She has been a member of the Mississippi Science Framework Revision Committee since 1991 and serves on the state assessment committees. She writes laboratory activities for various companies and reviews books, articles, and videos for Corwin Press, the American Biology Teacher, textbook publishers, Nova/PBS and Oregon Public Broadcasting Companies.
