BIO

Michael Hacker is Co-director of the Center for STEM Research at Hofstra University. He attended public schools in New York City, was graduated from Stuyvesant High School, received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from the City College of New York, and is pursuing Doctoral studies at Ben Gurion University, in Beersheva, Israel.
Hacker has served as a classroom teacher, department supervisor, and university teacher educator. As the New York State Education Department (NYSED) Supervisor for Technology Education, he managed the development and implementation of innovative middle and high school curricula that now serve as national models. He has co-directed nine large-scale National Science Foundation (NSF) projects that advance K-14 STEM literacy. For 48 years, engineering and technology education (ETE) has been at the core of his professional life; his energies have been devoted to bringing ETE into the educational mainstream.
He was inducted into the International Technology Education Association (ITEA)Academy of Fellows in 2004, received the Epsilon Pi Tau Distinguished Service Citation in 2001, the ITEA Award of Distinction in 1995, and was named State Supervisor of the Year by the ITEA in 1993. The Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers awarded him its Mathematics and Science Education Award in 1992.
He is the author of five secondary school textbooks, three professional compendia, and numerous journal articles and conference proceedings. He has been a consultant to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the British Technology Enhancement Project, and to state education departments and technology education professional organizations nationwide. He has served as an NSF expert panel reviewer, and has directed several international NATO-sponsored conferences focused on technological education. He was a member of the writing team for the NSF/NASA-funded national Standards for Technological Literacy.
