Using Authentic Research Experiences to Promote Explicit Nature of Science Instruction in the Classroom

Effective nature of science (NOS) instruction is a state-mandated (and nationally recognized) learning goal for K-12 science education. Successful students of science should possess an informed view of the nature of science. The ExPERT Program (Extended Professional Experiences in Research for Teachers) is a year-long professional development program for high school science teachers designed to allow teachers to increase their understanding of, and their ability to teach about, NOS. Through an authentic summer research experience (128 hours over 4 weeks) and a professional learning community (136 hours over 11 months) teachers are given the tools and experiences necessary to inform themselves about the nature of science as well as learn the pedagogical content knowledge to teach their students about the nature of science.
