"Mathematical Argument in the Elementary Grades: Building Student Understanding of Core Arithmetic Content using the Standards for Mathematical Practice"Susan Jo Russell, Principal Scientist, The Education Research Collaborative at TERC
Overview: Through a mathematics activity and video classroom examples, we will consider how elementary students engage in mathematical argument while deepening their understanding of core arithmetic content, and what teachers can do to include all of their students in this work. We will focus on two of the CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice: MP8, Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning, and MP3, Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
