Event: Building Support for School Mathematics: Working with Parents and the Public

The conference is designed for teams including:
  • leaders of successful mathematics projects, and

  • teachers who are ready to begin working with parents in their community.

Participants will attend six sessions for parents that were:
  • designed to help parents learn to recognize and support quality mathematics programs.
  • developed by leading mathematics educators and classroom teachers.
  • field-tested in diverse classrooms and currently used by teachers throughout the country.
The sessions include:
  • From Number Relationships to Basic Facts: Addition and Subtraction in the Primary Grades
  • Encouraging Mathematical Thinkers: The Basics and More
  • Multiplication: Helping Your Children Know Their Basic Facts
  • Fractions Across the Grades
  • How to Help Your Child with Math at Home
  • More Ideas for Helping Your Child with Math at Home
  • Conference Participants will receive the following:
  • guidelines for planning sessions for parents and the public.
  • detailed lesson plans (including transcripts) for conducting the six sessions.
  • support materials - masters for both overhead transparencies and handouts.
  • typical questions asked by parents, with sample responses.
The conference fee of $275 includes workshop materials totaling $150 and continental breakfast, lunch and snacks on May 6 and 7. Space is limited and registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with priority given to those attending in teams of 3-6 participants. During the last five years MEC, with support from the National Science Foundation (ESI# 9908602), has worked intensely with parents, teachers, administrators, and the public-at-large with school districts in Oregon, Colorado and Alabama. MEC has found that responses of parents are extremely positive when they are given opportunities to learn about quality mathematics education. Hotel rooms for confirmed participants will be available for $119.00 (limited number of classic rooms, single/double) and $139.00 (water view room, single/double) by calling the resort.
