Workshop on Improved Methods of Evaluating Quality of Professional Development for Mathematics and

Hosted by: CCSSO Improving Evaluation of Professional Development Project, and supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation
Location: OldTownAlexandria, Virginia
April 24-25, 2008

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) invites you to participate in a workshop designed for program directors and evaluators of professional development initiatives. The workshop will feature leading research and evaluation experts to address key recent developments and issues, including scientific research design, assessment tools, and longitudinal data systems to advance measures of program outcomes as well as improve the usefulness of evaluation results. The workshop will have two primary objectives:

1) Provide training for leaders and evaluators on applications of recent research in designing evaluations that are more effective in measuring change in teaching and learning

2) Demonstrate application of assessment tools and data systems that can improve the scientific validity and reliability of evaluations.

Featured presenters confirmed for the Workshop are: Norman Webb, Mike Garet, Stephanie Hirsh, Laura Desimone, Stephen Pruitt, John Smithson, Gary Cook, Rolf Blank. Each session will provide presentation and discussion of models, tools, and findings from recent work in evaluating professional development for teachers.

Research over the past decade has provided a base of knowledge on the characteristics of effective programs of teacher preparation and teacher knowledge and skill improvement. Now, rapid improvements are needed in the capacity of education systems to collect and analyze data on teacher qualifications and preparation, especially to evaluate current preparation programs to identify those with the highest chances of improving teaching and learning in science and mathematics.

The workshop is designed for 50 participants. It will begin at 9:30 am, Thursday, April 24 and adjourn at 1 pm, Friday, April 25.

If you are interested in attending or have questions, please contact Carlise Smith at CCSSO ( We will forward you information on the Workshop location and hotel arrangements.
