Dynamic Classroom Assessment (DCA) Facilitator Development Conference

Raleigh, NC
August 5-7, 2004

This DCA Facilitator Development Conference is an opportunity for professional development providers to become certified to lead DCA professional development sessions for teachers. The conference is designed for mathematics education leaders (for example, mathematics supervisors, teacher coaches) who are planning to implement the Dynamic Classroom Assessment program during 2004-05. Development of DCA was funded in part with a grant from the National Science Foundation (grant #9819914). DCA materials are published by ETA/Cuisenaire. We encourage pairs or small teams of leaders to attend the conference so that there is mutual support during the delivery of the DCA program to teachers.

Dynamic Classroom Assessment is a professional development program for middle grades and high school mathematics teachers. It helps teachers learn about and implement classroom assessment in instruction so that students not only learn more mathematics but also learn that mathematics in greater depth. The Core Module is 30 hours of professional development; there are 10 three-hour sessions. Three extensions modules (10 hours each) can be used to extend the professional development an additional 30 hours. Results from field tests indicate that DCA helps teachers think about mathematics instruction differently and deliver mathematics instruction that is better aligned with the needs of students.

The DCA Facilitator Development Conference will be held at the Crabtree Marriott Hotel in Raleigh, NC. It will begin at 2:00 p.m. on August 5 (Thursday) and end at 1:00 p.m. on August 7 (Saturday). Sessions will be held from 2:00 p.m. -8:00 p.m. on Thursday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Friday, and 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. During the conference, participants will work through all of the sessions, particular attention will be paid to the first four sessions, so that by the end of the conference, participants will be ready to begin delivery of the DCA Core Module to teachers.

Participants will be responsible for their transportation, hotel costs, and non-catered meals. The hotel address is 4500 Marriott Drive (across from Crabtree Valley Shopping Center) and the local phone number is 919-781-7000. The Marriott is offering a special rate of $84 per night; this includes a full breakfast buffet. This rate is guaranteed only until July 8, 2004. Participants can make room reservations by calling 800-228-9290 and requesting the rate for the "University of North Carolina DCA Conference" group.
