Abstract

"Bucking the national craze for large-scale testing, the Lincoln, Nebraska school district focuses its efforts on classroom-based assessments. ... Research has found that good classroom assessments can help teachers plan the next step in instruction, clarify the learning goals for students, and provide effective, frequent feedback about how to improve and actively engage youngsters in their own learning. Studies also have found that more demanding, intellectually challenging classroom assignments are linked with higher-quality student work."
