Hope for Urban Education: A Study of Nine High-Performing, High-Poverty, Urban Elementary Schools

Abstract

This report from the U.S. Department of Education examines nine urban elementary schools serving low-income communities that have achieved "impressive academic results." The schools, located in Texas, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Maryland, have all attained levels of achievement higher than most schools in the nation. This report uses case studies of all nine districts, discusses ways in which these schools are similar and different, and encourages educators in districts around the country to have hope and to "move from current levels of performance to a much higher level of academic expectation."
