What Teachers Know and Don't Know Matters

Abstract

This article by Dennis Sparks from the September/October issue of the Harvard Education Letter calls for an increase in high-quality professional development for teachers. Sparks, the executive director of the National Staff Development Council, discusses recent research showing a link between quality teacher professional development and improved student performance, maintaining that "[t]he potential of any educational improvement program will be wasted unless teachers have the training, follow-up, time, and other forms of support they need to implement them."
