High School Staff Characteristics and Mathematics Test Results

Abstract

This EPAA paper by Mark Fetler of the California Department of Education discusses the relationship between mathematics teachers' experience and preparation and student achievement in California high schools. In the paper, Fetler describes his finding that "teacher experience and preparation significantly predict test scores." The paper goes on to describe strategies such as staff development and recruitment incentives to increase the number of qualified high-school math teachers in California.
