This report from the Council of Chief State School Officers examines the NAEP and TIMSS results within the context of improving mathematics education in the U.S. Authors Linda Dager Wilson and Rolf K. Blank discuss ways to compare results from the two tests and detail strengths and weaknesses of U.S. students at different age levels. In addition, the authors identify school and classroom characteristics and practices that are related to higher student achievement in mathematics in the U.S. Based on these findings, the report offers practical suggestions for improving mathematics education.
