In this paper from the Education Policy Analysis Archives, author Robert Stake discusses the costs and benefits of student assessments. Stake examines the ways assessments are validated and argues that many high-stakes assessment systems have had negative consequences, such as the erosion of student self-esteem and the stigmatization of low-performing schools.
