In this article from the February 1999 issue of Phi Delta Kappan, Thomas O'Brien delves into some of the controversial issues surrounding mathematics education today. O'Brien describes the shortcomings of the "back-to-basics" approach to mathematics education, maintaining that collaborative, activity-based approaches, in contrast to "parrot math" approaches, are supported by eduational research and constructivism.
