Consciousness Levels and Political Relations as Determinants of Sustainable Mathematics Reform

Abstract

"'Reform' is undoubtedly one of the most overused words in education and politics. The term implies a structural change and improvement that has a system wide applicability. But given the 'dynamic complexity' of public education, the difficulty of implementing and sustaining significant reform is often under appreciated." In this presentation from the Second Virtual Conference on Sustainability of Systemic Change, held May 2002, Joe Merlino discusses how he and his project group in Philadelphia have negotiated "within a complex, interwoven web of external and internal constituents."
