Puerto Rico: Race, Ethnicity, Culture, and Physics Teaching

Abstract

"Multicultural education has gained great strides toward equal educational access for groups of racial and ethnic minorities in the last decades. However, this process has not been homogeneous or all encompassing. In the following pages, we will examine physics teaching in Puerto Rico to illustrate the hurdles facing minority students and to provide potential solutions to these barriers. This article will assist physics teachers across the nation in becoming more aware of how race and ethnicity contextualize physics and how it will affect students' reception of the discipline."
