Building Better Longitudinal Surveys (on the Cheap) Through Links to Administrative Data


"The charge of this National Academy of Education workshop is to evaluate the current and potential uses of the longitudinal surveys fielded by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) of the U.S. Department of Education (ED). The present paper is focused on how administrative data can be used to improve these surveys. Other papers in this workshop have done a thorough job of describing in detail the current surveys and their contents. Rather than duplicate their work, I discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the existing NCES surveys in broad terms. I discuss in more detail the administrative data that could be used to increase the power, scope, and utility of the NCES surveys."
