New Jersy Partnership for Excellence in Middle School Mathematics


This presentation describes the structure of a summer institute for mid-career middle school math teachers intended to deepen their understanding of the mathematics of the middle grades and some key aspects of mathematical pedagogy. In particular, we describe ways to evoke in teachers the effective mathematical practices called for by Common Core State Standards for Mathematics so that the teachers will experience the power and usefulness of these practices, demonstrate their power and value to their students, and thus increase the likelihood that their students will adopt these practices for their own benefit in learning and using mathematics.
