The 2011 Horizon Report


The 2011 Horizon Report conveys annual findings from the NMC's Horizon Project, an ongoing research project designed to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have an impact on learning, teaching and creative inquiry in higher education. Six emerging technologies are recognized across three adoption horizons over the next one to five years, giving campus leaders and practitioners a valuable guide for discussion and planning.

This year's Horizon Report identifies electronic books and mobiles as technologies expected to enter mainstream use in the first horizon of one year or less for adoption. Augmented reality and game-based learning comprise the second horizon of two to three years, and gesture-based computing and learning analytics round out the third horizon of four to five years.
