Grand Rapids teachers to work with top volcano expert this summer as part of Michigan Tech partnership

"Earth science sometimes offers middle school students a rocky introduction to specialized science classes, discouraging them from considering the field again.

But some Grand Rapids Public Schools teachers might find new ways to interest students through a new partnership with Michigan Technological University and a $4 million federal grant.

Between 10 and 20 city teachers will spend part of their summer at the Houghton University working with one of the world's top volcano experts, the first wave of middle school educators to be a part of the Michigan Teaching Excellence Program."
