"In
this chapter I will briefly summarize what the data tell us about the realities
of school staffing problems and teacher shortages, especially for mathematics
and science teachers. I will argue that the conventional wisdom on
teacher shortages is largely a case of a wrong diagnosis and a wrong prescription
and that while the above policy efforts are often worthwhile, the data
show they will not solve the teacher staffing problems schools are facing."
