The Perimeter of Ignorance

Abstract

Neil DeGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History, brings the view of an astrophysicist to issues raised in the current debates about design in the universe, and broadens the conversation beyond its usual terms. In a thoughtful but humorous essay, he reflects upon the scientific response to uncertainty, from Ptolemy to the present day, and the intellectual duty to incorporate the full complexity of the natural world in our theorizing. This essay, first published in Natural HIstory, and made available on Dr. Tyson's website, will be of interest to a very broad audience.
