Teachers usually get to ask the mathematics questions. But the Institutes of Higher Education Network for Mathematics (IHE) poses a mathematical question to those teaching the teachers.
IHE, which includes mathematics and education faculty from 16 local colleges and universities, will attempt to solve the word problem, "What is the Mathematical Knowledge Needed for Teaching?" at a conference Monday, Aug. 16 and Tuesday, Aug. 17 at Alverno College. A number of local high school and elementary mathematics teachers also will share their "real-life" classroom knowledge.
